Sunrise on a New Year
January 2, 2013

Japanese people like to observe the sun coming up on a new year, so much so that they often hike up a mountain in the early hours to get the best view. I’m not quite THAT devoted, but I did drag my kids up to the shores Lake Ontario in their pajamas. While they were not overly impressed with being woken up after a late night, and the sun was not quite spectacular enough to burn through the snowy haze, they did enjoy seeing the surfers and paddle boarders who, we all agreed, were crazy!

I can’t believe you were out in the cold after staying up after midnight. Do you ever sleep?
The sun didn’t rise until 7:45.
What a lovely custom! (I’m sure that, with time, even Amos will forgive you…)
Love it! And I must confess to occasionally being one of the crazy surfers on dawn patrol.
In a Great Lake? In January?
Cape Cod in January.
my mom used to wake us at midnight to go ice skating when the moon was full.
That is crazier–you win!
